AnswerIn order to rent from us, you will need the following:

  • A government-issued ID that has your address on it. This can be a driver’s license or any other form of identification that is not expired, or close to its expiration.

  • Deposit payment may be required for larger orders.

You may place your order before supplying this. In the event that we do not approve your rental request, we will issue you a full refund. You can send the picture of your ID to rentals@ccdcine16.com with your order number after placing your order.

Question How old do I need to be in order to rent from Cine16?
AnswerAnyone 21 years of age or older can rent from us. If you are under the age of 21, you will need a guarantor to co-sign for your rental before receiving the equipment.
Question Can I use a debit or bank card for my rental?
AnswerYes. However we may require a deposit for people who are using a debit card.
Question Can I rent equipment with cash?
AnswerYes, however we would still require a deposit for those renting with cash (this requirement may be waived for trusted, repeat clients). The deposit may be the entire replacement value of all of the equipment that you are renting.

Rental Process:

Question What does the basic renting process look like?
Answer

Here are the essential steps for renting our equipment:

  • Make sure that you meet the requirements (please see the section above).
  • Select your equipment on the site, and then check out.
  • Sign a contract that says you will be held legally responsible for any damage done to the equipment within the time frame that you are renting it, and also saying that you will return the equipment within a timely manner.
  • Decide how you want to receive your equipment (shipped to you, dropped off to you by us, or picking up the equipment in person at our office).
  • Return the equipment (again, you may ship it, drop it off in-person, or schedule for someone to pick it up directly).
  • We inspect the equipment to make sure it hasn’t been damaged.
  • (Optional) If you’ve rented the Digital Bolex D16, or the Ikonoskop (or any other applicable equipment) and you ordered the RAW file development, we would send you all of the footage on the camera after it has been returned to us in the file format of your choosing.

We have a post on our blog about our rental process. If you still have questions, please give that a look or ask us prior to renting.

Question Can I pick up the equipment myself?
Answer

Yes. You can come to our office to pick the equipment up yourself, or we can meet you at the station closest to our office to drop the equipment off to you (both are free of charge). Please send us a message if you plan on doing this. We are located about 45 minutes or so outside of Tokyo.

Question Can I schedule someone to drop-off my rented equipment?
Answer

Yes. For our clients who are living within the Tokyo area, you can schedule a drop-off of the equipment that you have rented to a location of your choice. This is very convenient for clients who are also renting a studio, or are shooting on location. There is a fee for this service, and it starts at $100.00, and goes up from there depending on the location and the amount of equipment being rented.

Question Can I schedule someone to pick up the rented equipment after I'm done using it?
Answer

Yes. Just like the drop off, you can schedule for someone to pick up the equipment that you’ve rented when you are finish. Again, it is very helpful to do so when you are shooting on location or in a rented studio. The fee is the same, and starts at $100, however when you schedule both a pick-up and drop-off when renting, the base fee is $150.

Question Do you ship equipment out?
Answer

Yes. We can ship the equipment to you, and have you return it to us via a courier. All shipping costs will be covered by you. Also, please note that we cannot ship some of our inventory (for example, some of our lighting equipment), as it would most likely be damaged in the shipping process, however those items are available for hand-delivery.

Question What happens if I'm late to receive my equipment?
Answer

If you are over an hour late to pick up equipment that you’ve scheduled to be dropped of to you, you will forfeit your entire rental of equipment usage for that day, and will either have to pick up the equipment the next day from our office, or reschedule another drop-off and pay the fee for the drop-off again.

Question What happens if I return the equipment late?
Answer

You will be charged on an hourly basis for every hour that the equipment is late. The hourly rate is 1/4 of the daily rate. So, for instance if you are renting something that is $100/per day, then the hourly rate would be $25/per hour. Meaning if you were more than 4 hours late to return an item, you would be charged a full day’s rate in addition to what you’ve already paid.

Question Can I extend my rental?
Answer

Yes. If there is no one else who has an upcoming reservation for the equipment that you are using, then you may extend your rental, without incurring a late charge. In order to do so, you will need to contact us a full business day before your rental time is set to expire. Failure to do so will result in a late charge.

If you use equipment that was meant to be returned without letting us know, and it hinders us renting the equipment out to another client, we will charge you for every hour that the equipment is late, and also ban you from ever renting from us again.

Question Can you develop the RAW files from the D16 or the Ikonoskop into a different file format?
Answer

Yes. If you have rented either the Digital Bolex D16, or the Ikonoskop A-Cam dII, and would like for us to convert the RAW files into a different format to you, then please let us know. We can even deliver the original RAW files with the converted files, or hold on to your RAW files, if you want to re-convert again at a later time. We have several different ways that we can handle this request depending on the amount of footage that you have. We can deliver them to you on a hard drive, or we can deliver them to you via a file sharing platform (like Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc).

We can deliver the files in any format that you wish to have them in (Apple ProRes, etc.) and we can also compress the files using SlimRAW to deliver them to you in the following options:

  • Lossless compression
  • 3:1 (lossy)
  • 4:1 (lossy)
  • 5:1 (lossy)
  • 7:1 (lossy)

SlimRAW also helps with removing the magenta or blue tint that can sometimes be seen in D16 footage. For output compatibility, and more info please visit the SlimRAW website.

The cost for this service starts at $100, and will go up on an hourly rate depending on the amount of footage you have, and the time it will take to convert. If you have less than 512 GB of footage, it will be a flat cost of $100. If you have more than that, please send us a request and we will send you and invoice.

International Requests:

Question Do you ship equipment outside of Japan for rental?
Answer

Yes. If you are outside of Japan, and are looking to rent something from our website, please email us first. We cannot guarantee that we will ship what you want to you outside of Japan. Please ask us first before renting.

Question Do you rent equipment out to people who are in Japan on a tourist visa?
Answer

Yes. Again, it all depends on the situation, and what it is you wish to rent, but we can rent equipment out to those who are visiting Japan. The requirements may be stricter. Please contact us with any requests of this nature.

Question Do you lease equipment out?
Answer

Yes. We do have monthly rates for those who are looking to use the equipment on a long-term basis. Please reach out to us directly for a quote.

Question How long will it take to get approval for renting if I'm overseas?
AnswerWe cannot guarantee anything but if you were to submit everything in a timely manner, we aim to have a decision for you within 48 hours. Please keep this in mind if you have a production timeline that you need to adhere to.

Equipment:

Question What happens if the equipment is damaged/stolen/destroyed/lost while I'm renting it?
AnswerWhile the rented equipment is in your possession, you are fully responsible for it. If it is damaged, we will immediately charge you a fee of $500. After the damage is assessed, we will refund you any difference if the cost to repair the equipment was less than $500, and we will charge you more if it cost more than $500 to repair.

If the equipment is stolen, lost or destroyed while in your possession, you will be charged for the entire replacement value of the equipment, immediately. You will be responsible for paying for said equipment immediately.

Question What condition is the equipment in?
AnswerThe equipment comes in various conditions. All are functioning and work as intended. All of the pictures that we use on our website are pictures of the actual equipment, so if you are concerned with its visual appearance, please analyze the photos properly before renting.
Question What if the equipment arrived and wasn't operational?
AnswerIf for some reason, during the shipping process, the equipment arrived to you and was not operational, we would need proof of what exactly is wrong with the equipment, and we would also need you to ship the equipment back to us immediately. We would also need for you to ship the equipment back to us certified to prove that you shipped it out immediately after it arrived to you in a malfunctioning state. Cost would be covered by us.
Question What if the equipment malfunctions during use?
AnswerIf a malfunction happens while you are using it, we would need to assess the situation, and make sure that it isn’t a malfunction caused by misuse. For instance, for the D16, you should never try to edit files while they are still on the camera. This will cause the camera to malfunction. Similarly, for the Ikonoskop, please do not try to offload footage directly from the camera, as it will most definitely overheat and damage the camera.

You will be supplied with a list of rules to be used as guidelines with some of the equipment that you rent. If you have followed these guidelines, and there was still an issue that came up during usage, then please contact us immediately, and we will try to walk you through fixing the issue. If you are in the Tokyo area, we may even be able to come out and assist you with fixing the issue.

In a worst case scenario, where the equipment is completely unusable, and you are not at fault, we will offer to let you use a comparable item or issue you a full refund.
